A legacy of sacred hospitality: Why Annandale is building a permanent home for sacred rest

A legacy of sacred hospitality

“I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” — Jesus, John 12:24

How long does a seed remain hidden in dark, cold soil before it begins to grow? How long before it sends its first green shoot into the light for others to see?

For me, it has been nearly 25 years.

The vision to create a place of retreat on Annandale Ranch was first planted in my heart when I was in my early twenties. Now, at 45 years old, I'm stepping out in faith to see that seed begin to grow. The road ahead will not be easy. In many ways, it already has not been. There have been challenges, delays, and uncertainties. But through it all, the vision has remained.

And so has the faith.

The Retreat at Annandale is more than a dream. It is a response to a real and growing need.

Why this matters now

We are living in a time when burnout, anxiety, and chronic stress have become normal for far too many people who spend their lives caring for others. Men and women in ministry, frontline caregivers, compassion workers, and high-capacity leaders are carrying extraordinary demands with too little margin for recovery.

Pastors absorb the grief, conflict, and spiritual strain of their congregations. Nurses and doctors move from one crisis to the next. Social workers and other helping professionals encounter repeated emotional burden. Many leaders continue showing up for others while their own inner reserves grow painfully thin.

Nervous systems are exhausted. Anxiety and stress have become constant companions. Relationships are strained. Time, energy, and resources feel painfully limited. Many of the people who care for others every day have little space to be restored themselves.

That is why The Retreat at Annandale is committed to creating a place designed for renewal.

What we are building

The Retreat at Annandale is being envisioned as a faith-integrated retreat and recovery center in the Texas Hill Country where weary people can experience guided restoration through sacred hospitality, contemplative rhythms, trauma-informed care, and nature-integrated renewal.

This is not about momentary relief.

It is about fostering sustainable resilience.

It is about helping people recover deeply enough that they can return to their lives, relationships, and callings with renewed clarity, steadiness, and hope.

As this vision takes root in the soil of the historic Annandale Ranch, a place marked by preservation and life is beginning to take shape. The hope is to create a setting that supports holistic healing of body, mind, and spirit. A place where people can step away from constant pressure, encounter the presence of God, and return strengthened for the work they have been called to do.

This is not about escape.

It is about restoration that helps people return.

A vision rooted in sacred soil

The vision for Annandale rises from land that has been stewarded by the same family since 1889. That long history of care is not simply a backdrop to the project. It is part of the story.

What has been tended over generations is now being offered as hospitality for generations to come.

At The Retreat at Annandale, the mission is to build a permanent home for sacred rest: a place where those carrying burnout, compassion fatigue, and emotional exhaustion can receive care that honors both spiritual renewal and embodied healing.

The retreat’s public vision describes a future center that will support nervous system recovery, emotional healing, and sustainable resilience through spiritual direction, somatic experiences, quiet, community, and restorative practices. That whole-person approach is part of what makes The Retreat at Annandale distinct.

An invitation to join the story

The Retreat at Annandale is now launching a $10 million campaign to build this permanent retreat and recovery center. This is more than a capital project. It is an invitation to help create a place of refuge for pastors, ministry leaders, healthcare workers, social workers, and other compassion-driven people who spend their lives caring for others.

The vision is big. The need is real. The purpose is clear.

And this work cannot be done alone.

If this vision resonates with you, explore The Retreat at Annandale and consider supporting the mission through the Annandale campaign page.

The story of Annandale reaches back more than a century.

Now it is reaching forward.

And with the right support, this legacy of sacred hospitality can become a permanent home for sacred rest.

Rejoice!
